Proportionality principle

The proportionality principle in US law states that the measures taken by law enforcement officers upon suspicion of a crime should be in proportion to the degree of seriousness of the crime.

The proportionality principle also indicates that the civil liability and criminal punishment should be in proportion to the tort and criminal act, respectively.
