The firm was originally founded as '''Haight & Mathes''' (by [[Bill Mathes]] & [[Raymond L. Haight's family name, by this time (1927), was already well-known in the state - [[Henry Huntly Haight]], 10th Governor of California (from 1867-1871), was his grandfather's cousin & relation [[Henry Haight|Henry Haight's]] (1820-1869) influence in San Francisco led to [[Haight Street]] being named in his honor.

With the addition of James Sheppard (Mathes' law school roommate) in 1928, the firm was renamed to '''Haight, Mathes & Sheppard'''. From 1932-1963, the firm saw several key leadership changes - in 1932 Haight left the firm, and J. Stanley Mullin & George R. Richter joined the firm (initially as law clerks). Mathes was appointed to the US District Court in Los Angeles by President Truman in 1945 - his departure, & previous addition of Gordon Hampton in 1938, led to the firm's current name '''Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton'''.

In 1975 the firm outgrew its space in the Rowan Building and relocated to the [[Bank of America Plaza (Los Angeles)|Security Pacific Building (now the Bank of America Building)]]. Of the remaining eponymous partners (James Sheppard became California State Bar President from 1960-61<ref>[http://www.calbar.ca.gov/Portals/0/documents/bog/bot_ExecDir/2015_PastPresidentsTableWeb_022515.pdf California Past State Bar Presidents] Retrieved May 2017.</ref> and died in 1964), all had passed by 2002.
