The Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law, is a law school located in Dallas, Texas. Founded in February 1925, the school was renamed Dedman School of Law in February 2001 in honor of its benefactors, the late Robert H. Dedman Sr., his wife Nancy McMillan Dedman, and their family.

Academic Programs[edit | edit source]

The Dedman School of Law offers Juris Doctor, Master of Laws, and Doctor of Law degrees. SMU also offers a J.D. through an evening law program.

SMU Law has consistently resisted grade inflation. Its median GPA is lower than many "elite" schools, with the median grade being just above a B.

Rankings and Recognition[edit | edit source]

SMU Law ranked 43rd among the nation's "Top 100 Law Schools" in the 2007 edition of U.S. News & World Report. In a survey published by D Magazine in May 2003, about one-third of "leading lawyers" in Dallas are SMU Law graduates. In the most current survey, that portion has increased to 40%.

Prominent Alumni[edit | edit source]

Graduates include, among others, Texas Supreme Court justices and White House officials. See List of Southern Methodist University people.

Programs and Resources[edit | edit source]

Dedman Law publishes five law journals: The SMU Law Review, The International Lawyer, Journal of Air Law and Commerce, Law and Business Review of the Americas, Computer Law Review and Technology Journal. Dedman Law offers a summer program at the University of Oxford in Oxford, England, five legal clinics, numerous international programs, and Underwood Law Library, which houses the Southwest's largest private law collection.
