Santa Clara County v. Southern Pacific Railroad Company, 118 U.S. 394 (1886).
Facts: The California state legislature drafted a new constitution that did not allow railroads to "deduct the amount of their debts from the taxable value of their property, a right which was given to individuals." Southern Pacific Railroad Company refused to pay taxes under the change.
