Santa Clara County v. Southern Pacific Railroad Company, 118 U.S. 394 (1886).

Facts: The California state legislature drafted a new constitution that did not allow railroads to "deduct the amount of their debts from the taxable value of their property, a right which was given to individuals." Southern Pacific Railroad Company refused to pay taxes under the change.

Issue: What rights does the U.S. Constitution grant to corporations?

Holding: A corporation is given certain rights as any person under 14th Amendment.
