Election laws in the United States govern the laws related to federal and state elections in the United States.

Elections Clause[edit | edit source]

The Elections Clause in the Constitution of the United States is Article I, Section 4, Clause 1:

The Times, Places and Manner of holding Elections for Senators and Representatives, shall be prescribed in each State by the Legislature thereof.[1]

Contribution limits[edit | edit source]

Contribution limits are published by the FEC. These amounts are adjusted for inflation. For example, in the 2023 - 2024 federal election, no more than $3,300 may be given to a candidate directly[2].

The McCain–Feingold Act of 2002 also limits the amounts of money that may be given to a political party. For example, the contribution limit for 2021-2022 by a person to a political party was $36,500 per calendar year.[3]
