Founded and continuously operated since 1927, the firm is full-service with 10 major practices areas ranging from Antitrust to Tax. In addition, the firm has numerous industry-focused teams including Entertainment, Healthcare, Privacy & Security, and others.
Since its founding, the firm's headquarters has remained in Los Angeles, California.

The firm was originally founded as Haight & Mathes (by Bill Mathes & Raymond Haight) in the historic Title Insurance Building[1] in downtown Los Angeles. Haight's family name, by this time (1927), was already well-known in the state - Henry Huntly Haight, 10th Governor of California (from 1867-1871), was his grandfather's cousin & relation Henry Haight's (1820-1869) influence in San Francisco led to Haight Street being named in his honor.
With the addition of James Sheppard (Mathes' law school roommate) in 1928, the firm was renamed to Haight, Mathes & Sheppard. The same year, the firm relocated down Spring Street to the Rowan Building.[2]
From 1932-1963, the firm saw several key leadership changes - in 1932 Haight left the firm, and J. Stanley Mullin & George R. Richter joined the firm (initially as law clerks). Mathes was appointed to the US District Court in Los Angeles by President Truman in 1945 - his departure, & previous addition of Gordon Hampton in 1938, led to the firm's current name Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton.
In 1975 the firm outgrew its space in the Rowan Building and relocated to the Security Pacific Building (now the Bank of America Building). Of the remaining eponymous partners (James Sheppard became California State Bar President from 1960-61[3] and died in 1964), all had passed by 2002. It added 5 additional offices in California until 2003, when it opened 2 offices in New York and Washington, D.C. By 2017, the firm had expanded its nationwide offices & added its international offices in Shanghai, Beijing, Brussels, London, & Seoul - for its current total of 15.Template:Cn
Revenue and Profitability[edit | edit source]
Sheppard Mullin has consistently ranked in the AmLaw Top 100 Law Firms by Revenue, as well as the AmLaw Top 100 Law Firms by PPP (Profits per Partner).[4]
The firm has seen gross revenue increase year-over-year since 1990; in 2017, the firm's total revenue increased to over $607m.[5]
